This VFX Breakdown Shows How ‘Game Of Thrones’ Made That Huge Wildfire Explosion

We waited patiently for something to finally happen with all of that wildfire beneath King’s Landing, and when the time finally came for one twisted, vile soul to use the Mad King’s weapon, we were not disappointed. Cersei Lannister ascended to the Iron Throne in the season six finale through a chain of events that began with her blowing up the High Sparrow and his followers, among other beloved characters, and ended with her son Tommen taking a walk out the window of his royal chamber. Many “That’s why they call it King’s Landing” jokes followed, and we all shifted our focus to figuring out what the hell we’ll do until the show returns next summer.

In the meantime, we can finally see the magic that Rising Sun Pictures used to destroy the Great Sept of Baelor in this season six VFX breakdown, and it’s pretty cool to not only see how they put together every little detail, from a single person in a crowd to the wildfire spreading through the streets, but it’s also nice to really get a close-up on the High Sparrow’s final moment.

Gross, for sure, but also pretty cool. I’m also still disappointed that they didn’t have a part in the season six blooper reel where his charred body flies into a car, causing the alarm to go off. And then the owner walks out and presses the button on his key to make it stop. Would have been a nice touch.

In addition to the above footage, here’s a VFX breakdown from Mackevision.
