Without a doubt, the most stunning moment from Season 5 of Game Of Thrones was the Battle of Hardhome, aka when the White Walkers showed up and reminded everyone why their ancestors built a magical 700-foot tall wall up in the middle of nowhere. And now the Spanish VFX company El Ranchito has a very comprehensive five-minute video showing you how much work went into making that scene come to life.
Everything is detailed in there, from the insane amount of composite layering to the half-real/half-digital undead army to how they made the giant look so bad ass. It’s a real eye opener to just how much work goes into a scene like this, which is probably why the last White Walker battle at the Fist of the First Men in Season 2 happened almost entirely off screen. Now that the show is so popular, maybe HBO could go back and George Lucas that scene back in?
