Ian Ziering swung by the Today show this morning to promote Sharknado 2: The Second One. As part of his appearance, they ran a clip from the made-for-TV movie that featured Al Roker, in character as a fictional, more Sharknado-y Al Roker, explaining the threat of a New York-based sharknado to the fictional Today show audience. Why in the hell they did this I’ll never know, especially after Tara Reid explained the phenomenon so succinctly just last week. (“It’s like probably ‘pigs could fly.’ Like, I don’t think pigs could fly, but actually sharks could be stuck in tornados. There could be a sharknado.”) Guess they already had it shot. No need to waste good footage in this economy.

This clip actually brings up another important point, too, and it’s one that I hadn’t considered: If Today exists in the Sharknado universe, then, conceivably, so do Kathie Lee and Hoda. Which means there’s at least a teeny tiny small chance that a chunk of this sequel will be the two of them discussing 50 Shades of Grey or whatever between gulps of white zin, completely oblivious to the fact that multiple shark-filled tornados are tearing Manhattan to pieces right behind them. That would make this all worth it.
