Jimmy Fallon is late night’s blender, or maybe even late night’s Vitamix (depending on who you ask). He can use his formidable skills as a comedian, impersonator and song and dance man to mix up genres to make something old, or relatively old, new. In certain cases, he can even improve subjects of his goofy remakes. Take Jimmy Fallon’s Bob Dylan impression, for example. It’s pretty good, but by itself — it’s just a Bob Dylan impression. A lot of people can sound like Bob Dylan, especially since he’s been a huge part of the cultural zeitgeist for the better part of 50 years.
But what Jimmy Fallon does here is a little different. He takes his Bob Dylan impression, improves it visually with a semi-remake of a classic Bob Dylan live performance, then covers Drake’s “Hotline Bling.” The end result is a stew created that tastes only like something Fallon and The Tonight Show could make. It definitely doesn’t taste like Minnie’s stew.
Bob Dylan fans who have never heard Drake, take a moment to listen. Walk hand in hand with Drake fans who have never heard Bob Dylan. Together, you can enjoy Jimmy Fallon’s version of “Hotline Bling” together. The way it was always meant to be.
