Olivia Pope is not feeling Adweek‘s latest cover at all. Scandal star Kerry Washington took the high road in calling out the magazine for awkwardly altering her image on the April 4 issue. In a thorough Instagram caption, Washington speaks highly of the profile feature article, but when it comes to the obviously Photoshopped cover image, she said it made her “weary” to look at it.
I always celebrate it when a respected publication invites me to grace their pages. It’s an honor. And a privilege. And ADWEEK is no exception. I love ADWEEK. It’s a publication I appreciate. yesterday, however, I just felt weary.
It felt strange to look at a picture of myself that is so different from what I look like when I look in the mirror. It’s an unfortunate feeling.
After reading Washington’s comments, Adweek’s editorial director James Cooper released a statement.
“Kerry Washington is a class act. We are honored to have her grace our pages. To clarify, we made minimal adjustments, solely for the cover’s design needs. We meant no disrespect, quite the opposite. We are glad she is enthusiastic about the piece and appreciate her honest comments.”
Cooper also tweeted that the only thing the magazine altered was her hair.
Happy @kerrywashington was proud of her Adweek profile, sad cover misses for her. Added volume to hair for dramatic effect. No disrespect.

This isn’t the first time the actress has been photoshopped to look different on a cover. In 2013, the now defunct Lucky Magazine turned her into a wild monster, so she has experience with getting photoshopped.
