When Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo playfully suggested that Frank Castle himself had made an appearance in the film, Marvel fans went ballistic. Would the popular anti-hero known as “The Punisher” get another shot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? According to THR, that’s almost exactly what’s going to happen, and it’s happening a lot sooner than you think.
That’s because Walking Dead and Fury star Jon Bernthal has been tapped by Marvel Television to play the vigilante in the second season of Daredevil, which was officially announced after the show’s successful debut back in April:
Bernthal has been tapped to portray Marvel favorite The Punisher on the series starring Charlie Cox, Marvel announced Tuesday. While series regular vs. recurring details are being kept close to the vest, Bernthal will have what is said to be a big presence on the series.
In Marvel’s official announcement, Marvel TV maestro Jeph Loeb teased the character’s involvement in Hell’s Kitchen when he explained that “Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same.”
That Murdock and Castle’s first meeting “will bring dramatic changes” should come as no surprise to avid comic book readers. Both men task themselves with ridding the streets of crime, but each takes a different approach. Daredevil — the blind lawyer by day — seeks “justice” and all those other noble traits we often associate with superheros. The Punisher, however, simply punishes them. After all, it’s in his name.
Bernthal definitely looks the part, and considering his work in shows like Walking Dead and films like Fury, he’s perfect for the role of Frank Castle. Hell — the only bad thing about this is we won’t see Tom Hardy executing the worst of Hell’s Kitchen.
