Entertainment Weekly just broke the news that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. might be getting a spin-off! What’s it going to be about? No one knows yet, but it certainly makes it look like S.H.I.E.L.D. will be getting a third season until we receive the official word. All that’s really known is that the spin-off is being produced by S.H.I.E.L.D. executive producer Jeffrey Bell and writer Paul Zbyszewski, but here is the most solid information about the setup that’s being reported:
…[S]tory elements that are still to come on SHIELD this year will be used to lay the groundwork for the potential new series. So by the end of the season –- assuming the details for this project haven’t already leaked, which is rather unlikely -– the spinoff concept should be clear.
Also, keep in mind that S.H.I.E.L.D. is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and there’s an Avengers movie coming out in a couple of weeks; last year, S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s course of action shifted when Captain America: The Winter Soldier hit screens, so we’re definitely going to see a crossover with the movie on the show. This could all somehow play out in the spin-off, so is there a chance that the spin-off has something to do with the Civil War storyline?
It’s certainly a possibility, but EW points out that this spin-off is not even officially happening, it’s only in the development phase. From there, ABC will decide whether or not it wants to order it to series, and there’s still a question mark concerning the future of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Chances are pretty good, though, if ABC is even considering a spin-off.)
Yay! More Marvel speculation! We won’t stop until all of our superhero fan fiction comes true!
