While I was busy hoping Netflix would pick up Longmire (or at least finish the series with another episode that explains the cliffhangers) and probably the rest of you were busy wondering if Adam Sandler could possibly become relevant again with a four-picture development deal, Netflix was busy finishing up its Marco Polo original series.
It was originally developed at Starz in 2012, but complications with shooting on location in China sent it back to the Weinsteins (who are producing — they don’t just get random unfinished projects lobbed at them), who then sold it to Netflix for $90 million. I had no idea my $8-a-month streaming membership could afford such luxury, but I’m kind of excited to see this series launch on December 12th. It could be to famous Italian explorers what Orange is the New Black is to women’s prison films.
Benedict Wong (Prometheus, Kick-Ass 2) stars as Kublai Khan and Italian actor Lorenzo Richelmy (a bunch of Italian films you may be familiar with if you’re Italian) is Marco Polo.
The trailer looks violent and features what appears to be an artful sex scene, so I’ve got my fingers crossed this is 12 episodes of Game of Thrones but with way fewer white people and zombies.
