Highest ratings through the first few weeks of being a late show host? The best combination of hair gel and a bright blue blazer since the ’70’s? The most product placement clips per episode? No, Stephen Colbert will be making history by being the first evening talk show to ever get the coveted post-Super Bowl spot for any network. The closest anyone has come to this honor is Jimmy Kimmel’s very first show occurring after a Super Bowl, but it wasn’t a back-to-back slot because an episode of Alias aired in between. In an era when less and less of an advantage is obtained by putting prize shows on after the biggest sporting event of the year, CBS is going out on a limb and giving Colbert the nod to lead off the night after the big game with James Corden’s Late Late Show to air later in the night after local news.
With the decision of which show to air after the most prime of television real estate all settled, the next round of guessing can be directed at what fun treats Colbert and Corden will have in store for their respective audiences on the big night. Colbert has already proven he can rise to a big occasion during his many years of hosting The Colbert Report and with this year’s Late Show Halloween special. With any luck, everyone who sticks around after the Patriots’ 5th Super Bowl victory will be treated to some mind blowing hilarity and an all out extravaganza of guests. It’s going to take a lot of jokes for anyone to have the energy to laugh after all of the beer, chips, wings and more beer they will surely be consuming for hours beforehand. If anyone can rise to the challenge of entertaining the drunk, food coma’d viewer at home it is most certainly Colbert.
