A new holiday ad from Toys ‘R’ Us has its fingers expertly placed on your heartstrings. Geez, it’s almost like they don’t care that we’re still trying to put our brains back together from that weirdo German supermarket commercial.
We’ll try to keep spoilers to a minimum with this tearjerking ad (2015: the year we worry about revealing the twists of commercials), but we’ll say that it combines father-and-son bonding, the title “Exactly What You Wish For,” a special unexpected gift, and the crappiest Christmas play in advertising history. It’s a good brand of weepy-eyed ad, so there’s no need to worry that Geoffrey the Toys ‘R’ Us spokesgiraffe will be found dead of carbon monoxide poisoning in the garage. Just ride out the minute-long clip and see where it takes you.
Elsewhere in company chatter, it has been announced that Toys ‘R’ Us will be closing up their Times Square flagship location by the end of January 2016. The real estate firm marketing the property says the current tenant’s lease will not be renewed and that talks have already begun with new retailers about taking over the space. Questions have arisen regarding the possibility of Toys ‘R’ Us popping up at another store in the area, but a spokesperson for the company has dismissed such talk as “rumors.”
