When we last left Jimmy and Gretchen in the season two finale of You’re the Worst, they had done the unthinkable and mentioned the L word. That episode, “The Heart is a Dumb Dumb,” was a strangely sweet and heartwarming installment of the show, reinforcing most of the show’s relationships, with the exception of Becca and Vernon (but it’s fun to watch their fake suburban happiness come crashing down around them). Aside from them, and probably Amy and Nina, all of the other awful-yet-endearing characters had something to be happy about, even if the rest of their lives are still in complete chaos.
In the first promo for the third season of You’re the Worst, Jimmy and Gretchen seem happier than ever, as their own weird brand of love still has them fighting relationship stereotypes by destroying someone’s family-sticker-decorated minivan with a sledgehammer and power tools. If anything, this teaser shows us that the one thing that this show – and probably most shows – needs is more explosions. Just Jimmy, Gretchen, and especially Lindsay blowing everything up. It would at least make Sunday Funday a lot more interesting, because who doesn’t love watching hipsters explode?
The third season of FX’s You’re the Worst debuts on FX on August 31.
