Faster, higher, hornier. What would the Olympics be without steady reports of the most athletic people in the world hooking up and potentially taking things to the Coca-Cola® BoneZone™? It’d be like having the games without a run-up where the host city didn’t have a sh*tload of problems heading in. It’s practically unimaginable, really.
According to a report from the Associated Press, Tinder has been getting a healthy workout in the Olympic Village this month. Mind you, this shouldn’t be too much of a surprise considering the popularity of the service in Sochi in 2014. According to a Tinder spokesperson, matches in the Olympic Village have soared to 129 percent over the weekend with the expectation of more of that activity to come as the games continue.
(One imagines Grindr and Scruff have gotten a bit of a boost too.)
“The Olympics is a very sexually charged time,” explained online and mobile dating expert Julie Spira when speaking with the AP. “Young athletes and attendees have been using dating apps heavily in prior Olympics, but now the popularity of an app like Tinder continues to grow and grow.”
So if you were curious why so many condoms were earmarked for Rio, now you know why. It’s almost as if a bunch of super-athletes might be into hug-n-kiss time with other super athletes or simply wanted to scope their peers out for funzos. It certainly doesn’t hurt if you’re good looking, as one Olympian helpfully points out.
Yemi Apithy, a 27-year-old French-Beninese fencer, said he used Tinder “just for distraction.”
“We meet people from a lot of nationalities,” he said.
Has he found anyone?
“For sure,” he said. “I am a pretty boy.”
Those pretty boys have all the luck. And prettiness.
