Barack Obama Honored The USWNT At The White House, Calling Them ‘Badass’

The U.S. Women’s National Team is still taking their much-deserved victory lap after winning the 2015 Women’s World Cup back in July, and it’s finally brought them to the White House, where they were feted by President Obama. He made his presidential jokes, including one about Carli Lloyd being more qualified for president than some of the actual candidates (looking at you, Donald). But his best line wasn’t a joke at all.

Obama and the USWNT were introduced by Ayla Ludlow, a 13-year-old who wrote a letter to the president, imploring him to address people like her brother, who said boys always are better at soccer than girls. Obama responded, saying, “This team taught all America’s children that ‘playing like a girl’ means you’re a badass. [Applause] Maybe I shouldn’t have used that phrase.”

On the contrary, Mr. President — using strong, nearly-foul language is the best way for someone in your position to get a point that important across. The USWNT should take that phrase and plaster it all over their advertising, because people love badasses, and if they don’t love the USWNT for that reason already, they should. These women’s moment in the sun continues, as well it should.
