James Gunn got a chance to talk to Collider about Guardians of the Galaxy 2 at the Saturn Awards this weekend, revealing a bit more about what we can expect from the sequel to last summer’s hit Marvel film that didn’t feature an Avenger in the title. Gunn’s chat echoes much of what we’ve heard about the movie to this point, possibly explaining why Chris Pratt was brought to tears after reading the script. According to Variety, the film looks to cover a bit of the wider mythology involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the backgrounds of the people within:
“I think it’s a more emotional movie,” Gunn said. “It’s both a bigger movie and a smaller movie because we focus more intensely on some of the characters.”
Gunn also hinted that “Guardians 2″ will provide interesting hints for those interested in Marvel’s greater mythology.
“We get to learn a lot about fathers in the second movie,” Gunn said, which could mean Peter Quill’s parentage will take centerstage. There may also be answers to the spate of unanswered lineage questions raised by the films about other Marvel characters.
Elsewhere in the interview, Gunn talks a bit about the highly touted Awesome Mix Vol. 2 and notes that we get to listen to it fully in the sequel. Technically he says we haven’t listened to it yet, but I would argue that the last two songs in the first film are from Awesome Mix Vol. 2 and not the first tape. Who really cares, though. If it’s as good as the first soundtrack, it can overlook as many small details as it wants.

Guardians 2 seems to be shaping up as a smaller affair than the first film, but hopefully it’ll leverage the backstory aspect into telling more about the larger galaxy.
