Despite What You May Have Heard, Spending $1,000 A Week On Weed Won’t Make Your Music Better

The outro on Madvillain’s “America’s Most Blunted” features a sample that advises, “It’s a known fact that marijuana increases creativity from eight to 11 times. In fact, everyone finds that they’re more creative stoned than straight.”

Everyone except former Mars Volta and At the Drive-In singer-guitarist Cedric Bixler-Zavala.

According to Bixler-Zavala, he used to smoke a $1,000 worth of weed a week, but now he’s stopped. To hear him tell it, “There’s so much stupid behavior caused by weed, but I always had that cliché: I needed it for creativity. I’ve come to realize that at the end of the day, it’s only you yourself that creativity comes from.”

The general takeaway here is that not everybody can be Snoop Dogg, smoking a staggering quantity of reefer and still being able to function and make music. The bands that Bixler-Zavala has trafficked in have made what is often called “stoner music,” and they still do, but Bixler-Zavala has put the marijuana behind him, which works for him, and that’s cool. Plus, he’s got a lot more cash now, what with the not spending most people’s yearly salary on dope anymore.
