Remember “Do The Bartman,” that now infamous animated rap banger that’s a part of Simpsons history (and just so happens to be co-written by Michael Jackson)? C’mon, you know you know it. Damn thing was on XM’s ’90s channel yesterday.
Well, an anonymous buyer has purchased the rights to the track for $38,500. “Do The Bartman,” which was originally released in 1990 on The Simpsons Sing The Blues, wasn’t only co-written by Jackson, but also featured backing vocals from him.
Music Business Worldwide reports that the full publishing and songwriting rights for the song have been sold through auction site Royalty Exchange.
The sale allegedly includes “both BMI and Sony publishing royalties” from the track, as well as royalties for a collection of other songs by Bryan Loren, who co-wrote and produced the song with Jackson.
Jackson’s involvement with “Do The Bart” was a part of Simpsons folklore for quite some time. Although the late singer was signed to Sony, the song was released through rival record label Geffen.
However, in 1998, Simpsons creator Matt Groening finally addressed Jackson’s contributions, saying: “It has always been amazing to me that no one ever found out that Michael Jackson wrote that song.”
