Sure, you could spend millions on carefully crafted practical effects, with all the latex and puppeteers needed to bring the impossible to life. And then spend even more on CGI to make sure you create a vivid, realistic alien universe. Or you could rely on the power of imagination instead.
That’s what Dumb Drum did with their sweded remake of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer. And they don’t use any shortcuts, either; everything about this, from the a cappella rendition of the score to the practical effects, in both senses of the word, are homemade. And, truthfully, for the buck seventy five they spent, it’s actually pretty good; they even have lightsabers that unsheathe properly.
Really, the only question left is whether they’ll start taking on the TV spots. We really want to see how they’d handle a stormtrooper going toe to toe with Finn.
