When we last left Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) — the heroine of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt — our favorite Ex-Mole Woman was jubilantly celebrating after winning the case against Reverend Wayne Gary Wayne (Jon Hamm), who’d held her captive underground for 15 years while he valiantly tried out for The Apprentice. Her jubilation lasted about 12 seconds; by the end of the episode, she’d found out that Dong (Ki Hong Lee) had married someone else in order to avoid getting deported. Titus (Tituss Burgess) suffered a similarly devastating romantic blow: His estranged wife showed up out of nowhere after witnessing his viral YouTube video. Jacqueline (Jane Krakowski) decided to head back home to reconnect with her Native American roots, and, in a shocking turn of events, Donna Maria (Sol Miranda) revealed she’d been able to speak English all along.
That was all the way back in March. Since then, we’ve received precious few tidbits about Kimmy‘s second season. We know that the show temporarily created a Pizza Rat Boulevard. We know that some enterprising genius turned “Peeno Noir” into a Game Of Thrones anthem. We know that the show’s creators were, at one point, casting Kimmy’s mom. And now, thanks to new info and a first-look photo from EW, we know that, at some point, Kimmy Schmidt will dress herself in an elf costume.
EW’s sneak peek brings up more questions than it does answers. Why is Kimmy dressed like Zooey Deschanel from Elf? (Okay, we have an answer for this: Because she’s “supplementing her nanny gig with a smattering of new jobs, including as a holiday-store elf,” reports EW.) What garish garment is Titus gripping onto, and why? (This is unclear, but I’m hoping he’s going to don it and film a “Peeno Noir” sequel.) Why is Jacqueline so horrified? Has the anus of Jacqueline’s dog stopped being “purely decorative”?
Kemper doesn’t answer the latter question (if you want to email us personally, Ellie, that’s fine), but she does tell EW that in season two, Kimmy’s “a little bit in denial about the past,” but attempting to “forge ahead on all fronts.” So, in that sense, nothing’s changed. But, Kemper added, Kimmy’s “not really juggling this year” when it comes to boyfriends. Which means all may not be lost with Dong.
Season two of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt premieres in spring of 2016.
