I recall hearing that somebody once told me the world was gonna roll me. Almost too true. That was probably heavy on the minds of Smash Mouth, the creators of pop gems such as “All-Star” and “Walkin’ on the Sun,” when the group released a cover of the David Bowie and Queen song “Under Pressure,” on Monday in honor of David Bowie. I know what you’re thinking: “What? These guys covered such a classic and iconic song? It sucks, right?” Wrong! Well, maybe. I don’t know anymore.
After a few listens, the cover slowly won me over, although I can’t tell if that’s because I’ve lost my sanity, because it sounds like these guys have been sitting on this since their formation in the ’90s and I kind of appreciate the nostalgic ’90s pop rock sound, or both.
Seriously, this is the fifth time I’ve listened to this. As the past few days have shown us, Bowie’s influence reached people across the world, including Smash Mouth. It’s worth a listen, considering Steve Harwell does both Bowie and Freddie Mercury’s vocal parts by dueling HIMSELF. But don’t say I didn’t warn you if you find yourself unironically enjoying this cover by the end of the day. Yup, what a concept.
