It’s been almost a year since Zayn Malik left a spiky-haired hole in boy band One Direction, and without a clear-cut reason for his departure, fans who have been asking themselves over and over again, “WHY? OH DEAR GOD, WHY?” have never been able to find any closure. In a new interview with Beats 1’s Zane Lowe on iTunes, however, Malik finally gives some insight, and apparently he never actually wanted to be there in the first place.

When Lowe asked Malik when he started to get the feeling like it was time to go, he gave the following response:

I think I kind of always wanted to go, from like, the first year. I never really wanted to be there, like, in the band like I just gave it a go because it was there at the time and then when I realized the direction we were going in — mind the pun — um, with the music, I instantly realized it wasn’t for me because I couldn’t put any input in, you know, I couldn’t give my opinion on this or that because it didn’t fit the grain of what we were as a band and what we represented. That’s when it became frustrating for me.

Understandable. That must have been very difficult for him. So, we assume he’ll be returning all of the millions and millions of dollars he made during his five-year stint in the band now? Yes? Just kidding! We wish Malik the best of luck in his solo career.
