Sam Smith took home the Oscar for Best Song last night, and in his speech suggested that he was the first openly gay man to win an Oscar.
“I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen, and he said that no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar,” he said. “If this is the case – even if it isn’t the case – I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world.”
While that is a nice sentiment, it isn’t true at all, because Elton John, Steven Sondheim, and Bill Condon, among others, have taken home golden statues over the years. Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, who won Best Original Screenplay in 2008 for Milk, decided to express his displeasure with Smith over Twitter. Who knows what is going on behind the scenes, but whatever it was inspired Black to tweet out the shadiest of shade.

Daaaaaaamn. Not only is Black calling out Smith for taking credit for something he didn’t accomplish, he would like Smith to kindly refrain from texting his fiancé, English diver and Olympian Tom Daley. Between this and the backlash over beating Lady Gaga, Smith may be having a tough time enjoying his moment.
