The Wave helmer Roar Uthaug has a vision for his upcoming Tomb Raider reboot. Prepare for something grittier, realer and a touch more Norwegian.
Uthaug offered up some dish on Lara Croft’s return to big screen after the Angelina Jolie era. Fans of the tone of the recent revival of the video game side of the franchise are likely to be pleased with what the director has to say. Speaking with IGN while during press for The Wave, Uthaug praised the current direction of the franchise and expressed his own desire to treat the game’s heroine as something far removed from a playable pin-up.
“I think making Lara Croft feel like a real human being, that’s definitely something we want to bring to the big screen as well,” he said. “I think we’ll want to make people relate to Lara as a character. I’m hoping to bring some of my Norwegian sensibilities to the franchise.”
*pauses for a moment to imagine a-ha doing the score*
The reboot, which Uthaug says will aim to be modern and real, also was a draw to the filmmaker because of the fortitude of its protagonist. He told IGN he’s been a fan of Lara Croft’s work since the original installment of the series and strong female characters are definitely his cup of tea.
“I’ve always been a fan of strong female characters,” he added, “and I think I’ve had strong female characters in all my previous movies, so that’s something I thought was interesting.”
