According to Setlist.fm, Weird Al Yankovic, Uproxx’s Person of the Year for 2014 (and our entire nerdy lives), has performed “Yoda” live 1,065 times, and “The Saga Begins” 602 times. That’s a lot of Star Wars for one man, but the “Lola” and “American Pie” parodies are crowd favorites; Weird Al usually ends his set with “Yoda.” So, why hasn’t he recorded a new Star Wars song?
Because he couldn’t find a rhyme for “Kanata,” but also:
[Everybody] on my Twitter feed was like, “Oh! You have to do another Star Wars song.” In fact, a few years ago I teased, “You know, I do a Star Wars song every 20 years like clockwork. It could be about that time.” But I looked at it practically. I’ve already got two Star Wars songs in my set, both of which I pretty much have to play because of fan demand. If I had a third Star Wars song, it just sort of becomes the Star Wars show. So for that reason alone, I kind of feel like I probably should just keep it at two. (Via)
I doubt anyone would complain about hearing three Star Wars songs (that’s also the number of times most of his fans saw The Force Awakens in theaters), so long as Weird Al balances the set with one song about Star Trek. And no, “…who could correctly guess the number of molecules on Leonard Nimoy’s butt” doesn’t count. (The answer is three.)
