Watch The Founding Fathers ‘Go Crazy’ In This ‘Hamilton’ Tribute To Prince

Prince’s untimely passing on Thursday saw widespread emotional tributes as the circumstances of his death began to reveal themselves. Folks mourned his loss in the traditional way, filled with tears, but many people also turned up his hits in the privacy of their own homes. They danced in tribute while feeling that’s what Prince would have wanted. His whole life was a celebration, and in rare instances like these, paying tribute can take the same form. In this spirit, the cast of Broadway’s Hamilton ended their show by getting down to “Let’s Go Crazy.”

This was a bittersweet sight, that of some Founding Fathers letting loose, and leading man Theo Wago led the cast in what looked like an impromptu jig. However, creator Lin-Manuel Miranda tweeted that musical director Alex Lacamoire “spent the day orchestrating the chart.” Not incidentally, costume designer Paul Tazewell also discussed how the play’s Thomas Jefferson finery was “something of an homage to Prince” both in Edwardian-ruffle detail and rock-star vibe.

Hamilton wasn’t the only Broadway tribute to recognize the iconic artist, for The Color Purple‘s cast also finished their show with a Prince tune. Naturally, they chose “Purple Rain.”
