Arya Stark has been traipsing around the seven kingdoms, murdering people with her best friend Needle for five glorious seasons on Game of Thrones but becoming one of the most-loved characters on TV isn’t why Maisie Williams originally signed on to the show.
The actress, who was just 12 at the time shooting began on the hit HBO series, had a very practical reason for agreeing to play the deadliest member of the Stark family; she needed a laptop guys.
Williams chatted with The Guardian before the show’s season six premiere. (Quick update, this season she’s still training as an assassin under the face-swapping Jaqen H’ghar and minus her eyesight of course.) Along with bashing internet trolls and squashing some Doctor Who rumors, the actress let slip the real reason she was interested in George R.R. Martin’s fantasy series:
““The thing I was really obsessed about was whether I would earn enough money to buy myself a laptop. My stepdad, Gary, just looked at me and said: ‘I think there’ll be enough for a couple of laptops, Maisie.’”
Okay yes, this is such a millennial thing to say, but it’s still kind of awesome. Arya Stark is one of the most kick-ass characters on GoT and Williams portrayal of her has opened a lot of doors for the young actress — she’s just 19 — but it’s nice to know that not everyone gets into the business just for fame. They do it for the money too.
