Marvel will occasionally do very odd things to promote their movies. But generally it’s pretty normal, restrained stuff: joking on Jimmy Fallon, charity contests, stuff like that. At least in the U.S.; apparently in Europe, they promote movies with weird, broad comedy sketches.
Ostensibly, the above video is Daniel Bruhl, who may or may not be in character as Baron Zemo, taking Robert Downey Jr. on a culinary tour of Berlin. In reality, it appears the local chef, a member of #TeamCap, and Bruhl have decided to team up to feed the dumb American anything they can find, including donuts covered in baking soda, laxatives, ping-pong balls, and foam fingers. In the process, Robert Downey Jr. shows just what it means to commit to a joke:
If you’re wondering just what the heck is going on, one of the many pet peeves Germans have about American tourists is that they think all German food is beer, chocolate, and sausage. Especially in Berlin, which features one of the most dynamic restaurant scenes in Europe. Ordering a currywurst in a fancy restaurant is like going to Texas beef country and ordering the fish. Although, if you’ve never had a currywurst, you really should.
Anyway, this is apparently how they sell Marvel movies in Germany. We’ll see if Captain America: Civil War is actually an eating contest on May 6.
