Best Coast frontwoman Bethany Cosentino has been very vocal about sexism in the music industry throughout her career. She helped amplify the controversy surrounding Amber Coffman‘s sexual assault by music publicist Heathcliff Berru, and has used her platform to call out misogyny wherever she sees it. Cosentino continued her crusade on the May 4 episode of The Daily Show.
Cosentino started by explaining how she accidentally became such a figurehead in the movement to rid the music industry of sexism.
“As a woman, I felt it was so important to support my peer, my female peer. I didn’t realize that it was going to become a huge thing, ” Cosentino said of her support for Coffman. “I thought, ‘You know what? I’m going to back Amber because that’s what I feel that I should do. This is an incredibly important conversation that needs to be had.’ And the next morning I woke up, it was huge. And all of a sudden I was like, ‘Okay, I’m a spokesperson for this now.'”
The “California Nights” singer also discussed the way that online trolls discourage women from being open about instances of assault, but thinks that other women coming forward with their stories will help to counter that. Cosentino went on to describe how sexism permeates the industry at all levels.
“There are a lot of people in the industry that do shady things, that treat you differently because you’re a woman,” she said before sharing stories about sound technicians who refuse to believe Cosentino knows how to work her own equipment. Check out the whole interview up top.
