For something like the 28th year in a row, The Big Bang Theory was both the highest rated comedy on TV in 2015-16, and the highest rated scripted show in total viewers (21.3 million), period. The CBS sitcom even finished third overall, behind NBC’s Sunday Night Football and Fox’s Empire, in the all-important 18-49 demographic, despite slipping 11% from last year’s numbers.
After nine seasons, The Big Bang Theory is still absurdly (and maddeningly) popular, and there’s little reason to think its fans would protest another five years of bazingas. Just think how much money Kaley Cuoco could spend on rescuing gorillas! But according to Kunal Nayyar, who recently spoke at MCM Comic-Con London, next season might be the show’s last.
“Look, next season, as it stands on our contract, could be the last season of Big Bang Theory. To be completely honest… I know people are gonna want to know what happens after season 10. I don’t know what’s going to happen.” (Via)
Nayyar’s comment doubles down on what showrunner Steve Molaro told the Hollywood Reporter last year. When asked if season 10 would be the show’s last, he replied, “I think so,” before adding, “The reality is that maybe season 10 is the ending point. The real answer is, I don’t know and all I can do right now is go episode to episode and try to make each one the best that we can.” Nayyar and Molaro carefully didn’t say anything declarative — they think maybe something might happen, eventually. And can you blame them?
When your popularity is being compared to Taylor Swift’s, you’re doing something right.
