After a somewhat uneven season six (though only by the show’s Skytanic standards), Archer returned to form in season seven. I don’t know if it was the reduced episode order, the Los Angeles setting, change in profession from spies to private eyes, or the scavenger hunt, but everything worked. There are still stories left to tell, and now Archer has plenty of time left to tell them because FX just renewed Adam Reed’s animated series for three additional seasons.
“We can’t say enough about what Adam, [producer] Matt [Thompson], and the entire Archer team at Floyd County have done to keep this series so insanely funny and vital through seven seasons,” FX’s co-president of original programming Nick Grad said in a press release. “The move to Los Angeles this past season as private detectives was just the latest twist in Archer’s legendary exploits and the next three seasons will to be just as amazing and unpredictable. We are thrilled to continue making great TV.”
Archer is the latest show to be renewed for three seasons at once, after Netflix did it with Orange Is the New Black and CBS with The Big Bang Theory. Seasons eight, nine, and 10 will each be eight episodes long, which should stave off creative exhaustion. Although if Reed does get burned out, and he wants to have Krieger practice karate for an episode, that would work, too.
There’s no word on how the renewal affects the potential movie.
