Ghost Rider Is Coming To ‘Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Next Season, But Maybe Not The One You Expect

Big things are coming to next season of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., and it’s about to get a little hotter in here. At the Friday night panel at San Diego Comic-Con, it was revealed that Ghost Rider would have an arc in AoS season 4, played by True Detective‘s Gabriel Luna. However, instead of Johnny Blaze, the Ghost Rider from the feature films starring Nicholas Cage, AoS will feature a more recent iteration of the character, Robbie Reyes. In his comic arc, the high school aged Reyes works in a body shop and is gunned down during a street race while trying to provide a better life for his handicapped brother, Gabe. While he is possessed by the Spirit of Vengeance in the comic, a Satanic serial killed will take the reins instead on AoS.

While Blaze was a stunt rider who dealt out his vengeance from the back of his massive motorcycle, Reyes drives a muscle car instead. The vehicle was revealed at SDCC as well at the Marvel booth, getting fans excited for this next step in the Marvel Universe.

Executive producers Jed Whedon and Melissa Tancharoen said that the inclusion of this arc signifies a clear shift in the show that will take our crew to much darker places than seasons past.

“With Doctor Strange coming out this year, the Marvel Universe is moving into new waters,” Whedon told EW after the show’s panel at Comic-Con on Friday. “We felt that this was obviously a great character that we’d love to have on our show that we feel fits with that shift.”

“We decided to go with the Robbie Reyes version of the character because he’s a newer comic, and also it would be interesting to bring in someone with that background into our dynamic of the show,” Tancharoen said.

It will be interesting to see how Reyes fits in with the Inhumans and the rest of the agents, and how he compares to the bonkers Cage interpretation. Until then, patience is key.
