As we struggle to make it through the long, hard winter that is Game of Thrones’ year-long hiatus, fan-theories become even more important.
Speculating about whether Jon Snow will hook up with Sansa Stark or if Jamie Lannister will be the one to end Mad Queen Cersei’s reign is the only thing we have to hold onto, the only thing keeping us warm during the night that is dark and full of terrors. But none of the cast seem to really care about that.
Conan O’Brien hosted his special “Conan at Comic-Con” this weekend and the comedian made sure to invite some of the cast of the HBO fantasy series. Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were there, as were Iwan Rheon (the actor formerly known as the bastard Ramsay Bolton) and Nathalie Emmanuel, a.k.a. Daenerys Targaryen’s right-hand woman on the show, Missandei.
Along with reminiscing on a great prank Benioff and Weiss pulled on John Bradley-West (who plays love-able Samwell Tarly) the cast also took the time to shoot down a popular fan theory. Spoiler alert: Nathalie Emmanuel is here and she’s ready to crash all of your fan ‘ships to hell.
Conan quizzed the actress on a rumor about the romantic relationship between the Mother of Dragons and her loyal handmaiden. Apparently, Googling Daenerys/Missandei unearths all kinds of interesting yet NSFW fanfics that people think might actually make it into the plot next season. Emmanuel said she knew of the hookup theory and the passages from George R.R. Martin’s books that fans are using to further it along.
“Yeah I heard that one,” Emmanuel told Conan. ” That’s a popular theory actually that people ask me. I wonder why?”
In the books, following Khal Drogo’s death, Daenerys does take on of her handmaiden as a lover (for a brief time). That character has already died on the show, but fans were hoping something might be brewing between the former slave and her queen. Well, take those dreams and stomp on them because it ain’t happening folks. Emmanuel said she didn’t think a relationship between the two would ever be possible and when Conan deferred to the two men in charge, Weiss had this to say.
“I don’t want to say that that couldn’t happen,” Weiss said, pausing for a minute before finally stating the obvious, “It won’t happen.”
Really, it’s for the best. Trying to mash the two women’s names together would’ve been a feat not even internet shippers could accomplish and let’s be real, if any two, powerful women are going to be hooking up on this show it will obviously be Daenerys and Yara Greyjoy. Stormborns and Ironborns do it better.
