There were plenty of people who worked hard to get Kevin Durant to join the Golden State Warriors this offseason. Most notably, Draymond Green did everything he could to convince KD to come play with the 2015 NBA champions.
Included in the list of Durant recruiters was one of the Warriors’ most famous fans: chef, TV personality, and mayor of Flavortown Guy Fieri. Well, Fieri probably didn’t do a ton of recruiting, but according to an interview he gave to First We Feast, Fieri got in touch with Durant’s agent in an attempt to bring him to the Bay.
I never…well, I shouldn’t say I never thought it would happen. I remember telling his agent during the Playoffs, “I know he’s coming up, you’ve gotta get him to Golden State.”
…
You can ask his agent, I said it to him during the Playoffs. I even have the text. I said, “It’s coming up, I want him, you gotta bring him.” And he was laughing—yeah, yeah, yeah—and he blew me off. [Then later on] I was away from my cell phone, out on the boat, and I was able to get a signal. In came a note from my buddy: “KD GS,” and I went arghhhhhh! I went and woke up the kids.
Imagine going back in time and telling former muffler salesman Guy Fieri that, one day, he’d be a celebrity chef with a zillion TV shows and enough pull to help convince one of the three best basketball players on earth to join his beloved Golden State Warriors. If that’s not the realization of the American dream then I don’t know what is.
