Marvel already have a solid reputation for providing a lot of spectacular eye candy and thrilling action sequences in every superhero film they release, but apparently the upcoming Doctor Strange movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch is going to take things to a whole new level … one so trippy that it must be experienced in 3D to properly appreciate it.
The first trailer for the film already hinted at this — it looks like Inception on steroids with shots of the world folding in on itself like some sort of giant demented pop up book. And now we have Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige talking to Collider about the difficulties of making sure Doctor Strange looks good in 2D when the thing is so damn stunning and complex in 3D.
“There are sequences of the film that 3D is actually necessary to tell the dimensional story that is happening, through visuals,” he said. “And we’re now finding ourselves in VFX reviews going, ‘Okay we know this is perfect for 3D, this is built for 3D, but the stories gotta work in 2D so how do we adjust it so it still works in 2D?’ But the 3D is going to be amazing.”
Collider‘s Steven Weintraub brought up the fact that past Marvel 3D offerings have been a bit lacking, and Feige agreed that many people were starting to feel a bit jaded about 3D in movies.
“Sometimes it can feel like ‘Oh, that tool was simply put on that movie so they could charge $8 more. And I think that’s where you get reactions like ‘Oh, c’mon.’ [But] there are other movies like Guardians [of the Galaxy] and Doctor Strange, that will be utterly enhanced in 3D.”
We’ll get a chance to see how enhanced things will be for ourselves when the new Doctor Strange trailer shown off at San Diego Comic-Con goes out to theaters and its dimensional story will be previewed ahead of other 3D movies.
