The reviews for Suicide Squad have mostly ranged from bad to downright apocalyptic, but all this bad press apparently hasn’t deterred fans from wanting to see DC’s bad guys in action. That’s because the David Ayer film opened Thursday night and racked up some record-setting box-office numbers.
Suicide Squad made $20.5 million Thursday evening, which is the biggest August opening day ever, and the 13th highest preview showing of all time. The news gets even better when you take overseas markets into account, where the movie has made nearly $30 million over the course of two days. And again, this is just the opening preview night — the movie goes wide in 4,250 theaters on Friday, and is expected to bring in $125 million at the domestic box office throughout the weekend.
For whatever reason, Suicide Squad‘s critical reaming doesn’t seem to have shaken fan support. Honestly, the reviews have been so hyperbolic, I think a good number of people may end up seeing the film purely out of morbid curiosity. How bad could it be? All it takes is $15 plus the cost of popcorn to find out! Of course, the real question is whether Suicide Squad will have legs. Batman v Superman also got off to a record-breaking start, but stalled out when the reviews were backed up by bad word of mouth.
