Last week, I thought I was so inventive for frying my pancakes in bacon fat. Turns out, there’s a whole world of bacon-flavored food items we’ve all been missing out on. Case in point: bacon popcorn.
The recipe comes from People, but it’s so intuitive that you’re probably kicking yourself for never having thought to try it before now. If you know how to make popcorn on the stovetop, you know how to make this — just use bacon fat in place of the oil you normally pop your corn in.
Bacon-flavored popcorn? Yes, please. People suggests adding the fried bacon to the popcorn for added bacon flavor, but how about candying that bacon and turning the bacon popcorn into bacon kettle corn? (Also: how many times can I get away with using bacon in this paragraph?)
And where does it stop? What other bacon-fried foods have we been missing out on? I regularly scramble my eggs in bacon grease because I don’t care about the condition of my arteries, and the bacon-fried pancakes were a fun experiment that I’m planning on repeating with real syrup (I don’t want to talk about it). Should we all start slathering bacon grease on our toast in place of butter? Roast our vegetables in bacon grease to give them a unique, porky je ne sais quoi?
Think about it. Just think about it. A world of bacony flavor is opening up before all our eyes. In the meantime, check out People’s instructional video for the popcorn. If you haven’t already left to go make yourself a batch of bacon popcorn yet.
