It pains me to say this, but it’s been awhile since Anna Kendrick — super talented, Twitter pro Anna Kendrick — was in a good movie. In reverse order, the last five titles in her filmography are Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (based on a Craigslist ad), Get a Job (completed in 2012; wasn’t released until 2016), Mr. Right (somehow squandered Kendrick and Sam Rockwell), Pitch Perfect 2 (not nearly as good as the original, and the original isn’t even that good), and Digging for Fire (lightly charming, if inessential, mumblecore).
Her last all-around quality movie: Drinking Buddies? Or 50/50, which is a classic. Point is, it’s been awhile, and Kendrick, who’s as capable at comedies and dramas as she is musicals and whatever Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is (besides great), could use a win. Playing Squirrel Girl could be that win.
That might sound silly — we’re talking about a superhero who can communicate with squirrels, after all — but ask Robert Downey, Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, and Chris Pratt what they think about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Or better yet, ask their accountants. Plus, unlike DC, Marvel movies are usually pretty good! Captain America: Civil War boasts a 90% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and that film’s directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, are already hard at work on Avengers: Infinity War. Yet they still found enough time to, like Edgar Wright before them, endorse Kendrick for Squirrel Girl.
“It would be perfect casting, and we’re huge Anna Kendrick fans,” Joe said, although killjoy Anthony added they already have their “hands full trying to tell the story we have with our preexisting characters.” So, Squirrel Girl probably won’t be in Avengers: Infinity War, but that doesn’t mean she, and by proxy Kendrick, can’t get a movie of her own. Sorry, Barb.
