Captain Marvel is already one of Marvel Studios’ most promising projects based on its super-talented star Brie Larson and writers Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out), but we still don’t know who’s going to step behind the camera to helm the film. Well, no final decision has been made yet, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel has narrowed their search to three female directors with rather diverse resumes.
First up we have Niki Caro, a New Zealand director who’s worked on all sorts of stuff over the past 15 years. She made her name with the critically-acclaimed family film Whale Rider, and recently did the feel-good Kevin Costner sports movie McFarland, USA, but she’s also done darker, grittier material like the Charlize Theron-starring North Country. Caro has the most successful film career of anybody on the list, although it’s hard to say if her directorial voice will be Marvel-compatible.
Lesli Linka Glatter hails from the world of television, where she’s been directing acclaimed dramas for 25 years. A very truncated list of the series’ Glatter has worked on includes Twin Peaks, NYPD Blue, Law & Order, The Good Wife, and Homeland. Glatter has little feature film-directing experience, but hey, a lot of the TV shows she’s worked on are better and more ambitious than most movies.
Finally, we have Lorene Scafaria who wrote Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist and directed Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. She’s the least-experienced name in the running, but Marvel has shown a preference for young directors with comedy backgrounds like The Russos, James Gunn, and Taika Waititi.
Captain Marvel flies into theaters March 8, 2019.
