You can pretty much talk to anybody at this point and they will end up telling you about how much they dislike Zack Snyder’s Man Of Steel. That extends to Batman V Superman, but it has expanded to some heated criticism of Warner Bros. at that point. Snyder’s first take on Superman was still far enough from the DC Universe, most of the praise or blame is Snyder’s alone.
That’s where the newest Superman, Supergirl’s Tyler Hoechlin, seems to look when looking at what to avoid with his version of the character and it’s also where Margot Kidder seems to go when she’s asked about the new films. Kidder famously played Lois Lane in the first two Superman films in the ’70s and returned for the terrible fourth entry a few years later. This didn’t turn out well. In an interview with HeyUGuys, Kidder goes into detail about her experiences with Superman and how she feels about Snyder’s new films.
One of her main points of contention is how Snyder has treated Lois Lane in the films:
They took one of the best American actresses’ around, Amy Adams, and didn’t give her anything to do! I mean, how stupid is that? They made her what used to be the girlfriend, which kind of ended in the 60s with women’s rights.
She then hits on the constant changes for Superman’s character in the films, compounding the origin story and moving it away from the “purely good person” that rescues people. The true agents to blame here are Warner Bros. and millennials, apparently:
I think there was a cynical decision on the part of the studios, which are now owned by multi-national conglomerates just like everything else on the planet. So they would make these artistic decisions by non-artists – guys would want to hit the millennial demographic because they literally make up about one quarter of the population.
Probably, my guess is what happened is when they decided to hit the demographic of the millennials in the later films. I think the directors were good, the actors were good but the basic approach wasn’t there.
Not the worst criticism we’ve seen, but it does at least check off a box on seeing what original Superman actors think of the new films. Just hunt down Gene Hackman and see what he thinks about it, then we can be finished with this.
