The comments section on a rock star’s social media account are all too often a space for Internet trolls to gather and cast stones, but sometimes it serves as a place for fans to bond with each other and interact directly with the musician. Back in December 2015, Trent Reznor posted a tweet announcing that Nine Inch Nails would be releasing new material this year, and fans have eagerly awaited this prophecy while growing antsy, as there are less than three months remaining in 2016.
On Tuesday, though, Reznor posted an Instagram photo from Washington, D.C., with director Fisher Stevens to promote a documentary with Leonardo DiCaprio Before the Flood, which addresses climate change. The film, scored by Reznor, Atticus Ross — also pictured in the post, Mogwai and Gustavo Santaolalla, will be released on Oct. 21. Fans were quick to compliment him while also pressing him for new NIN material. Reznor decided to respond with a few quick words: “2016 isn’t over yet.”
There are no other details — whether it will be in the form of a single or an album — but rest assured that he is listening to his fans and if he means what he says, we’ll be able to hear something from the iconic industrial rockers sometime in the next couple months. The last time Nine Inch Nails released an album was in 2013 with Hesitation Marks which the group supported with a world tour.
In the meantime, check out “Juno” from NASA: Visions of Harmony, which Reznor also scored with Atticus Ross.
