Not that long ago, nearly 95% of music purchased was on CD. Less than a decade later, the figure is closer to 36%, with online sales taking up a large part of the music industry pie chart, while the number of cassingles bought is down to negative-19. Damn shame, too, for everyone knows the cassingle is the ideal way to listen to music.
The fine folks at Digital Music News created a pie chart GIF, which you can see below, that “shows the revenue contribution from various formats, 1973-present, based on RIAA revenue figures.” It’s a nice, easy to understand way of visualizing how the music industry has coped with new technologies, from 8-track to SoundExchange.
