As we settle in and get ready for Game 2 of the NCLS the 4-0 Detroit Lions’ return to Monday Night Football after a 2,000 year hiatus, I thought we could take a moment to wish former Green Bay Packers/New York Jets/Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre a happy 42nd birthday. After all, he’s been having one hell of a bad weekend.
Last week, Favre told the hosts of Atlanta’s 790 “The Zone” sports talk radio show that he was really proud of his protégé, Aaron Rodgers, for leading the Packers to a Super Bowl victory last season. But of course us jerkface bloggers and the stupid lamestream sports media had to blow it all out of proportion and make Favre look like some kind of villain. Let’s re-visit Favre’s incredible praise…
“I’m going to be honest, I was not surprised. The biggest surprise to me would be that he didn’t do it sooner.
“My last year in Green Bay, [when the Packers went 13-3] prior to the first game, I made the remark that this was probably the most talented team that I’ve ever played on. And of course everyone looked up and was like, ‘This guy’s off his rocker.’ We were very, very young; take me out of the mix and we were by far the youngest team in the league. But I could see the talent pool across the board was outstanding. Now our season kind of ended up being a reflection of that.
“He’s got tremendous talent, he’s very bright and he got a chance to watch and see successful teams do it right. And so he just kind of fell into a good situation. On top of that, he’s a good player. I don’t think there’s any pressure on him now, the talent around him is even better than when I was there.
“So I’m really kind of surprised it took him so long. In the early part of last year season, it hadn’t quite clicked yet, and I didn’t know it would. I just kind of figured when they hit their stride, they’re going to be hard to beat. And that’s what happened.”

There you have it – nothing but praise for the guy who replaced him as the pilot of Green Bay’s high-flying offense. Sure, I suppose you could say that the comments were laced with back-handed slaps at Rodgers from a bitter, old douchebag, who screwed with Rodgers repeatedly by announcing that he was retiring, only to return and reclaim his job. But that’s just one perspective. And Favre wants us to know that he rarely talks to the media just because of this kind of misinformation. How serious is he? He talked to the media about it.
“Nothing, for the most part, surprises me anymore,” Favre told USA Today. “But I have to admit (the reaction to) this one surprised me.
“It is very [infrequent] when I do interviews. I was very gracious and complimentary of the Packers and Aaron Rodgers.”

You see? Everyone who spewed more insults toward Favre this weekend owes him an apology. He was simply trying to be nice by pointing out that Rodgers needed a little extra time to win with an awesome team than he would have. You know, if Favre were still young and not a complete dick.
