Surprise! New England Patriots mastermind and noted cuddlebug Bill Belichick is not a fan of silliness or frivolity. If you displease the original grumpy cat, he will unleash the sass. CONDESCENDING SASS, NO LESS!
Belichick’s AFC East leading Pats will be playing a 3-7 New York Jets football club on Sunday and a Pats/Jets showdown means shameless “Butt Fumble” references. At least, that’s what one reporter thought before asking about 2012’s infamous blooper where alleged NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez ran into the bum of his offensive lineman and the ball squirted loose for a Patriots touchdown. It may be old news four years later, but ass-related disasters are the ones we tend to grab onto.
Here’s the exchange:
Reporter: Coach, as you alluded to, you study past matchups as part of the preparation process. Have you found any excuse this week to analyze film of the “Butt Fumble.”
Belichick (marinated in sarcasm): “I don’t think we’ll get to that. Great question, though. Really, that’s awesome.”
Belichick makes a fair point. He doesn’t have to chat about a cherished goof from 2012 as part of his gig. That said, Belichick isn’t exactly over the moon about the regular questions he gets from reporters, so he can’t really hang his hat on that either. What makes this clip a perverse joy to watch is Belichick’s irritation with the reporter for attempting to make light of Almighty Football™ on his watch. This is industrial strength Bill Belichick. Enjoy with your loved ones.
