With all due respect to the masterpiece that is Tales from The Crypt: Have Yourself a Scary Little Christmas, it’s the Elusive Chanteuse® Mariah Carey that reigns supreme as the Queen of pseudo-modern holiday music. This has never really been in doubt, but some festive data research has done its part in backing this designation up.
Billboard has unveiled the rankings of the ten top-selling holiday downloads of all-time based off of data from Nielsen Music. (The all-time part is a bit misleading seeing as “Good King Wenceslas” didn’t exactly get a huge iTunes boost when it was first released, y’know.) Mimi’s immortal “All I Want For Christmas Is You” topped the list in an absolute blowout racking up over 3.2 million downloads since 2003, a total that roughly doubles the closest runner-up and probably gets a boost whenever Mariah’s A Christmas Melody airs on Hallmark.
Sliding down the second place chimney on the list is the Frozen cut “Do You Want To Build A Snowman?” holding 1.6 million downloads to to its name. Third place honors go to Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s “Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24),” followed by Justin Bieber’s 2011 holiday offering “Mistletoe” and the Brenda Lee classic “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” rounds out the Top 5. Surprisingly “What Can You Get a Wookiee for Christmas (When He Already Owns a Comb?)” failed to make it into the most downloaded ten.
