Former President George W. Bush is currently making the rounds to promote his new book Portraits Of Courage and it still seems that folks are willing to forget things that happened less than a decade ago in light of the current White House situation. Bush stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday to answer some fun questions about aliens, how the administration dealt with Dick Cheney’s itchy trigger finger, and talk about his paintings.
But before that, Kimmel had some fun with the former president’s hobby and decided to hit the streets for Lie Witness News to see what people thought about the president’s “paintings.” Of course, none of the paintings shown actually belonged to the president but it didn’t stop the folks from smothering them with praise and critical thought. Who knew President Bush was such a big fan of Harry Potter and 2Pac? I would’ve taken him more for a fan of The Flintstones and Glenn Campbell. Poor choice of fake paintings.
Bush does pop up at the end of the clip for a humorous moment, but the real show begins once he comes out for his interview. Bush discusses some of the things mentioned above, but a real joy is hearing about his odd date with Richard Nixon’s daughter Tricia back in 1969. It was an arranged date where Bush showed up at the White House in a purple Gremlin and took the then president’s daughter out to dinner. It did not go well according to The Telegraph’s coverage of a 2014 biography about George H.W. Bush:
“During dinner, I reached for some butter, knocked over a glass, and watched in horror as the stain of red wine crept across the table,” Mr Bush recalls in an anecdote-strewn new biography of his father George H W Bush which is released on Tuesday.
It had been George H W Bush, then working in the Nixon administration, who had invited his son, then a pilot in training with the Texas Air National Guard, to meet the president’s eldest daughter at a party in honour of the Apollo 8 mission that first orbited the moon.
But things only then went from bad to worse with Miss Nixon. “Then I fired up a cigarette, prompting a polite suggestion from Tricia that I not smoke,” he continued. “The date came to an end when she asked me to take her back to the White House immediately after dinner.”
If it teaches us anything, George W. Bush has always been a bit of a goofy klutz. It’s a far more likable side than some of the darker moments in his president.
