A Fighter Shows Just How Easy It Was For Daniel Cormier To Lose Weight By Grabbing A Towel At UFC 210

UFC 210 is wrapped up. Daniel Cormier finished Anthony Johnson even faster in their UFC light heavyweight title rematch, and all is relatively well in the light heavyweight world. Except, there’s this dark cloud hanging over UFC 210 — Cormier’s weigh-in. It still doesn’t make sense.

On the Friday before the fight, we saw a drained and pathetic-looking champ stumble into the official weigh-in area and come up heavy. Two minutes later, he stepped back onto the scale and had lost 1.2 pounds. How did that happen? Some are saying it’s an old, sketchy wrestling trick: The person weighing in grabs a towel and it will cause the digital scale to read lighter. Why aren’t people making a bigger deal out of this?

American Top Team fighter Roan “Jucao” Carneiro showed just how easy it is to lose weight in an instant. He lost 2.6 pounds in about 5 seconds, all with an innocuous-looking grab of the towel. It’s science!

Of course, Cormier is moving past the controversy. He addressed what happened at UFC 210’s post-fight presser:

“I made the weight. That’s how you put it to rest. Made the weight, fought tonight, defended my championship. If I was holding the towel I was just trying to hide myself. My whole ass was showing.”

It’s dangerous to assume that Cormier cheated the weigh-in, but what the hell happened? It seems like the MMA world is going to move past this quickly, but now we’ll know what to look for if this ever happens again.
