Rape charges against Wikileaks founder Julian Assange were dropped by Swedish prosecutors on Friday, but it’s not because they think he’s innocent of the crime. It’s because he’s been hiding away in Sweden’s Ecuadorian embassy for five years and without the means to get him in court, they case cannot continue. “I can conclude, based on the evidence, that probable cause for this crime still exists,” Sweden’s chief prosecutor Marianne Ny said, according to the New York Times.
And while Assange is free in that regard, he’s still wanted by London police for charges of failing to appear in a British court. So, while, Assange remains holed up in the embassy, noted supporter M.I.A. came to his defense, posting a picture of him and captioning it with a long letter about his innocence. The letter ridiculously argues that Assange was framed for rape, forgetting that a hero of anti-censorship and government transparency can also be accused of sexual assault.
“Why not cash in ur intellect as most of us do? That type of collective social rape is ok,” M.I.A. wrote, comparing the physical torture of nonconsensual sex to the marketing of sexual images. “The porn images or fucked up weird sh*t my kid has popping up on Youtube every time he searches lego on the internet or constant peddling out of images and messages that say it’s ok to be rampant f*ck boys and girls , in this is modern society.”
M.I.A. ends the post with, “He helped you to see hypocrisy you should thank him and fast fix your system not hide him or the cracks he exposed.” Apparently, she thinks we owe Assange our thanks…?
