Southern rock pioneer and decorated singer-songwriter Gregg Allman has died at age 69, reports Billboard. No cause of death has been provided at the time of their report, although it was noted on Allman’s official website that he passed away “peacefully” at his home in Savannah, Georgia.
Gregg Allman carved out a marvellous career boasting work both as a member of The Allman Brothers Band (alongside his brother Duane until his death in 1971) and also as a solo performer. Allman’s career has been stuffed with accolades ranging from multiple Grammy triumphs to a well-earned spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Mind you, to some he may be better known for his high-profile marriage to Cher in the ’70s, than when “I’m No Angel” or “Melissa” pops up on the radio.
The singer-songwriter’s manager emphatically denied reports in April that had Allman in hospice care. Allman had previously been diagnosed with Hepatitis C and would receive a liver transplant in 2010.
“Gregg struggled with many health issues over the past several years. During that time, Gregg considered being on the road playing music with his brothers and solo band for his beloved fans, essential medicine for his soul. Playing music lifted him up and kept him going during the toughest of times,” read a statement on Allman’s site.
