Alanis Morissette has turned her iconic ’90s rager Jagged Little Pill into a musical. According to The New York Times, the singer-songwriter has finished writing a story around the album — which included hits like “Ironic” and “You Oughta Know” — and it’s set to debut in 2018 via the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge.
The production has snagged Tony-winner Diane Paulus to direct and will receive a book adaptation via Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody.
“It had so much meaning in its time,” Paulus told the paper, before praising Morissette’s “courage and power and vulnerability.”
Paulus added that she considered Pill to be “one of the most important albums of the last 30 years.”
According to Rolling Stone, the musical will follow a family through several generations as they deal with issues surrounding gender identity and race. The musical will also feature songs from Morissette’s discography outside of her landmark album.
“This team that has come together for this Jagged Little Pill musical is my musical theater dream come true,” Morissette said. “The chemistry between all of us is crackling and I feel honored to be diving into these songs again, surrounded by all of this searing talent. Diablo and Diane are already taking these deeply personal songs that are part of my soul’s marrow to a whole other level of hope, freedom and complexity.”
