The Boston Celtics got better this July 4 when they snagged Gordon Hayward in free agency, but that doesn’t mean they’re done trying to match the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference.
Celtics GM Danny Ainge has had himself a busy offseason, trading the top pick in the NBA Draft and working the phones in attempts to trade for Paul George and Jimmy Butler at different points in the summer. But after luring Hayward to Boston with the help of coach Brad Stevens, Ainge’s newest trade target may also be a major piece from the Western Conference.
Reports swirled on Thursday that the Celtics were looking to work out a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies to acquire Marc Gasol.

Details of the move were scarce, but Gasol on the market would indicate that the Grizzlies are indeed looking to rebuild after losing Zach Randolph in free agency. But does Boston actually have interest in trading away assets to acquire a player that’s struggled to stay healthy over his career?
Isaiah Thomas might think the Celtics can beat LeBron and the Cavaliers in the East as-is, but most of the NBA world isn’t so sure that’s the case just yet. Gasol could certainly make things interesting, though, if Boston could find a way to give Memphis what it wants without giving away too much. We’ve seen multiple times in just this offseason where Ainge wasn’t willing to commit to giving away assets in trades, but maybe Gasol is worth it.
