After the dust settled from the Big Game and it was safe for rappers to become active again, LA rapper Cozz tweeted out the album cover and tracklist for his upcoming album, Effected. Unsurprisingly, it features a pair of familiar names: Kendrick Lamar and Cozz’s Dreamville Records label boss, J. Cole. Also, just to put the icing on the cake, he presented one of the songs from Effected, the melancholy “Bout It.”
“Bout It” is a slow-bouncing, introspective track built on a simple piano loop, featuring singer Garren, who sums up the song’s message in his verse. “I’m a keep pushing,” he says, reinforcing the encouraging lesson Cozz sets off with his intricate bars. Like his mentor J. Cole, Cozz always tries to lend a “keep hustling, don’t give up” vibe to much of his music, even as he raps about the trials of growing up in Los Angeles street life.
Effected will also feature a guest appearance from eternally laid-back New Orleans rapper Currensy on what appears to be a tribute to Erykah Badu. J. Cole will appear on “Zendaya,” while Kendrick pops up on “Hustla’s Story.” Effected will all streaming services next Tuesday, February 13, a throwback to the old music release day.
